Topical Treatment for ACL Injuries and Sprains

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and sprains caused by accidents or strenuous sport activities can often be quite painful and impair mobility. The high doses of oral pain relievers required to achieve effective tissue concentrations can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal upset and also result in drug interactions, but studies have found that properly formulated topical medications can provide effective pain relief with fewer side effects. In patients with ankle sprains, one study showed that topically-applied ketoprofen was significantly superior to orally administered ketoprofen with regard to reduced swelling and improved mobility. Using quality chemicals and equipment not found in most pharmacies, we can compound prescription topical preparations containing the dose of medication(s) that are needed.
